Your Guide to Spiritual Healing
The terms energy healing and spiritual healing are often used interchangeably.
But they are different things.
In this article I clarify what each is and share some of the most common types of spiritual healing.
Let’s dive right in with understanding what spiritual healing is.
What is Spiritual Healing?
Spiritual healing is focused on restoring your soul to its whole. It clears blocks to connecting to your true self, your purpose and claiming your sovereignty. Additionally, most spiritual healing is done by the beings in the spiritual realm such as angels and guides. The human healer is the assistant to them and serves as a witness to releasing the blocks.
How is Spiritual Healing Different Than Energy Healing?
The biggest difference in spiritual healing to energy healing is that energy healing is focused on the physical body and the energies around you. While spiritual healing is focused on the soul. You need both to be able to function at your best, but they are done for different reasons.
They can also be combined during one session to improve the outcome. In fact, most practitioners that I know add energy healing to the spiritual healing to ensure the healing doesn’t do harm to the client. However, not all energy healers are trained in spiritual healing.

Types of Spiritual Healing
Shamanic Healing
Shamans have been traced back over 100,000 years. It is not a religion in the way we define religion now. Instead, it is a way of supporting life through connection to spirit. And is highly customized to the community practicing it.
While you will find similar techniques across cultures, they are varied based on where the community is located.
Shaman’s job was to provide guidance and support to the community. This included shamanic cures that are part of spiritual healing.
These include:
Curse Unraveling
Curses are a normal part of life. However, they aren’t always intentional like movies would have you think. Yes, you can have someone intentionally cursing you, but they can be triggered by strong emotions and situations.
For example, a mom scared about the safety of her child can create a curse from pure emotions. A jealous teenager can create a curse. You can even curse yourself with enough energy behind your self-talk.
Curse unraveling removes the curse back to its origins. This allows you to do what you need in life without others’ interference.
For example, using the example of a scared mom. The curse may be created that the child doesn’t go outside where they may get harmed. But as the child grows older, they decide they want to be a park ranger. But they keep getting blocked because the curse doesn’t allow them outside. Removing this will allow them to chase their dreams.
Depossession
Possession is another normal part of life and doesn’t resemble what is shown in movies. You can have a being possessing you that only impacts a small part of you.
Possessions happen when a being doesn’t cross over after death. This can happen for many reasons, but as a being stays here longer, they lose energy. We provide the energy they need to continue being here, so they attach to use.
During compassionate depossession the being is assisted in getting to a place that is better for them. Allowing you to have your sovereignty again. There are other types of possession than humans, but they can all be removed with the same process.
Soul Retrieval
During times of extreme trauma, we can lose parts of our soul. The soul part detaches from us to save a part of us during the experience. In a soul retrieval the practitioner calls that part of the soul back. Allowing you to be whole again.
Soul Wound Healing
Less severe events can still cause damage to the soul, just not as bad as soul loss. Imagine this as more like a knife cut that never heals.
The problem with leaving soul wounds unhealed is that it makes it easier for possessing beings to attach to someone. This is also true for soul loss. Often after a depossession you may also need to do soul retrieval or a soul wound healing.
Healing Prayer
Prayer is a powerful form of spiritual healing. The person praying is calling in spiritual help to solve the situation at hand. Without needing to know why or what exactly is wrong, prayer allows God to solve the situation. Healing prayers you can use.
How to Know if You Need Spiritual Healing
Here are some indicators you may need spiritual healing:
- If you find that you are struggling – no matter what you do. You have tried counseling, coaches, energy healers, limiting beliefs work. But nothing seems to help? There is most likely a spiritual issue stopping you.
- Sudden changes that make no sense and are not typically part of your personality. For example, if you don’t drink and suddenly you need one every day, there is a chance you need a depossession.
- The space around you changes energy. Not all things that need a spiritual healing are attached to you. It could be your house picked up an uninvited guest.
If you aren’t experiencing any blocks and everything feels good, then you most likely don’t need spiritual healing. An energy healing may be what you need to shift your energy instead.
How to Choose a Spiritual Healer
The right healer will be different for everyone, and you may need multiple depending on what is going on. Here are some things to keep in mind when picking out a healer.
Where did they get their training? What did it involve?
While spiritual healing does have the attribute that each healer’s spirit team will teach them how to do things, the good ones I know are actively learning from others.
Much of spiritual healing is based on oral traditions passed down verbally from generation to generation. And typically, the programs are longer term than a day or two. For example, my level one curse unraveling was fifteen hours. My level one compassionate depossession was thirty hours. And that was just level one of each! And I then work with a mentor after class to ask questions, practice and learn more.
How do they protect their energetic space?
When doing spiritual healing work you are interacting with many dimensions. A safe practitioner will be using sacred space, working with a gatekeeper and with bigger issues bringing in another healer to assist them.
Do they have the training you need?
Not every healer will be trained in everything. Make sure what you need is something they can do. For example, I don’t do Soul Retrieval, so I would send you to another healer for that.
Do you like them? And do they understand what you need?
All practitioners are different, even if they are trained in the same thing. They work it based on their own personality, experiences, who they learned from, what different techniques they are trained in, their spiritual gifts and their spirit team.
Think about a hairdresser. They have the same training, but they all have different skill sets. Some are great at men’s cuts; some are great at hair extensions. Some get advanced training, and some may train in a complementary skill set like make-up. And you wouldn’t keep going back to someone you hated. Spiritual healers are the same.
How do they make sure a healing crisis isn’t triggered?
Too much healing at one time can make you sick. You may have heard of this as ascension sickness or spiritual flu. Too many spiritual communities celebrate you hitting this stage. But that is wrong. You don’t want to overdo it and create a situation where you can’t function.
Part of my training was how to not trigger healing crisis. Yes, that means you may need three sessions instead of one. But you will be able to work and take care of your kids the next day. Healing crises creates more problems – avoid them!
Remember the goal is to make your life easier – not to make it harder.
Other Things to Know About Spiritual Healing
- You Don’t Have to Have a Spiritual Awakening – Your goal does not have to be to grow spiritually. You can have a shamanic depossession just so you can show up in your life better. There is no requirement that you are spiritual.
- You Have Final Say – You decide if something feels right, and it is what you need. Just because someone says this is what you need doesn’t’ mean you must do it. Trust your intuition.
- No One Magic Solution – Everyone’s journey is different. What works for me might not work for you. So, you have to experiment to find what you need.
Most importantly, spiritual healing is not an excuse to avoid doing the inner work. You may have heard of this as spiritual bypassing. Where you think you can do an energy or spiritual healing practice and it will fix everything.
But that is not true or healthy! If you don’t deal with the emotions that come with life you will never be in a fully healed space.
In fact, many shamanic cultures teach that the shaman does the cure, but the person does the healing.
Spiritual healing takes away the block from the spirit realm. You clear the emotional and mental blocks. Together they align you to your soul’s purpose.
