How to Make Decisions with Your Spirit Guides

Spiritually connected living has us blend our daily activities with our spiritual connection, helping us get help from our spirit guides and put our spiritual beliefs and practices into everything we do.

Decision making is a great place to start doing that. When we make decisions, we want to blend our own inner wisdom and intellect with guidance from our spirit guides.

But where to start? This is the process that I use to combine everything into a simple decision-making process.

A top-down view of a wooden desk with a journal, a cup of herbal tea, and oracle cards labeled 'Intuition' and 'Guidance.' The journal says, 'My own inner wisdom, blended with guidance from my spirit guides.' Text overlay reads: How to Make Decisions with Your Spirit Guides.

TL;DR (quick summary): Stop the decision-making spiral by blending human logic with spiritual insight. This guide walks you through a simple 4-step process:

  1. Calm your nervous system (Meditation or movement).
  2. Journal for clarity (Data gathering from the human perspective).
  3. Consult your Spirit Guides (Asking for the “big picture” view).
  4. Review & Decide (Using your free will to take the best path forward).

Step 1: Calm and Clear Your Mind

Making any decision from a place of intense emotions and overwhelm rarely gets us a great outcome. So, the first thing I do is perform a reset.

I use meditation or a walk to clear my mind. If it is meditation, then it is a ten-minute session. I typically do not use a guided meditation for this. Instead, I use calming music and focus on slowing my breath.  Occasionally when I am feeling unsettled, I will do a visualization to connect and ground to the earth.

I choose the walk when I feel like I have too much energy to be able to calm down with meditation.

How do you know what will work for you? Practice with different options and observe how quickly you can calm down. But more importantly, how easy it is to get the best results from the next step.

If you move to the next step and are still reactionary or unable to focus, then try something else to calm down. This article on a quick 10-minute spiritual reset can help.

Step 2: Journaling

Once my mind is calm, I will gather my thoughts by journaling. Consider this your data gathering phase that will give you everything you need to make a decision from the human perspective.

When I do this journaling, I do the following steps:

  • I will write out what the situation is – getting as much detail down as possible. I approach this like I am writing the story of it, like I would if I had to write a movie script.
  • Next, I ask myself – how does this make me feel? Processing your feelings before you get to decision mode will help you make a decision not based purely on emotion. Your emotions aren’t going anywhere until you address them, so it is better to do it now than a few weeks or years after you make the decision.
  • Finally, I begin to explore different solutions. I blend brainstorming with exploring how that solution will work.

After this I narrow it down to one or two that I like. At this point it is time to move on to connecting with your guides.

Step 3: Guidance from Spirt Guides

Taking what I believe my decision should be, I then ask my guides for their insight.

I do this in a few different ways.

First, I ask them to give me insight into what will occur if I move forward with the decision I chose. The purpose of this is to gain insight into what you might expect and learn from this decision. Instead of asking if this is good and getting a yes or a no, you want more details. A “yes, it is good” from them may get you very different results than what you expected.

With this you aren’t looking for exactly what will happen, but more gaining insight into the journey itself.

Here is an example of one I did a few years ago. I was trying to decide what career path to take.  I had three options on the table. I asked my guides for each one what my life would look like if I followed that option.

Option 1: They showed me a very nice life. I was happy and it was “easy.” However, it also meant I would not be living on purpose and would not accomplish all the incarnation plans that I had.

Option 2: This option would be very hard for the first few years, but in the end, I would live on purpose and be happy with what I was doing.

Option 3: It wouldn’t be as hard as option 2, but it would take longer to get to the same place.

Second, I ask them if there is anything that I am missing. Is there a component that I haven’t taken into consideration? This allows you to tap into an outside source that can see the entire picture better. Like you would ask a friend what they think, this is the same thing but with your guides!

Third, I ask them, is there anything else they think I need to know right now? While this is like the last question, it is broader so that they can bring in information that doesn’t directly involve the decision.

For example, maybe you aren’t missing anything, and you are seeing everything the right way. But there is a timing issue they want you to be aware of with something that doesn’t have anything to do with this. And while it might not change your decision, it could impact when you take action.

Step 4: Review Everything and Decide

Now that you have your ideas and what your guides think, it is time to make the final decision. Remember you do have free will and can disregard what your guides say. This is your decision.

Final note on major decisions: you may need to repeat this process several times. Each time you go through this you will gain more insight. Your subconscious helps connect details that aren’t immediately obvious. And your spirit guides can help bring confirmation signs and new details to help you have more confidence.

So, if at the end of the first time through this you still feel unsure or your instincts say that there is something else you need to know – then hit pause and repeat this until you know what path you want to take.
